Arts and Technology

Technology is becoming more important for artist. Not only do we have many new forms of art to work with but it's also so much easier to share your work with others. Before the only way an artist could get the public to see their work was if they got it in a gallery. Flickr, facebook, blogger, and myspace are just a few of the sites that allow you to easily share your work with the world.

Minotaur Series

I've just begun research on a new series of prints, drawings, and sculptures on the myth of the minotaur. In 2008 I created two pieces around this myth, a sculpture titled "Minotaur" and a print "Theseus Slays the Minotaur". In this new series I'm going look at not just the minotaur but also the other important characters of the myth.

New sculpture process

I was having problems keeping my sculptures light but still strong I think I may have found a solution. I make a wire armature, cover it in Great Stuff spray foam, carve the foam back a little, then cover the whole piece in plaster bandages and finish it with a bronze patina. With the first couple of sculptures I made using this process I feel like I might have used too much foam and had to trim back and waist too much.

The top sculpture is with a patina and the bottom one is without a patina.

Polyphemus video

Here's a video made by Alex Cormack of a sculpture from my BFA thesis show back in December 2008 set to the music of Gogol Bordello.

The piece is about 6.5 feet high, 9 feet wide and 4 feet long. It's made out of five hollow wooden blocks that are held together with bed rail fasteners. The fasteners were necessary because I needed to be able to assemble and disassemble the sculpture without doing damage to the piece.

The sculpture is titled after a giant cyclops because of it's overwhelming presence and the feeling that the center piece is looking down on the viewer.
